My favorite guilty pleasure this semester so far: while working my 3-hour morning shifts at the music library, I take the library's new headphones--the fancy-schmancy noise-cancelling ones that cost upwards of $100 and were meant to be used by music majors who need to hear the nuances of Mozart and Debussy--and I hook them up to my iPod. And I listen to Bon Jovi.
It makes me happy.
Another simple joy: closing my iTunes and getting that magical message, "One or more users are connected to your shared music library." It's a confirmation of my taste in music that others, probably people I don't know, want to hear songs from my library. Well, either that or they were just looking for "Let's Get Retarded." Which, yes, I have. It's part of that repertoire of All Purpose Party Songs owned by every college student. Others include "I Believe In A Thing Called Love", "Get Low", and "Hey Ya!"
And then there are the albums--or rather, since albums are obsolete, collections of songs--specifically owned by every Pomona college student--namely, "Give Up" by the Postal Service and the "Kill Bill" soundtrack. That says something about us, doesn't it? Yes, we're indie and quirky, but we're all alike in our indiequirkiness.
