How Not to Let Blogs Ruin Your Life
1. The first rule to fighting on online journals is: Don't fight on online journals.
2. The second rule to fighting on online journals: Don't fight on online journals.
The entire world does not need to hear about your silly little feud with someone that was probably based on a misunderstanding anyway. Not only that, writing something online feels a lot more impersonal and thus less uncomfortable than telling it to someone's face. So you can pretty much insult whoever you want however you want, feeling invincible in your little computer nook...until you have to face that person later.
3. A blog is not a diary.
Unless you know something will come of it, it's probably best not to confess your love for someone online. Although there is something cathartic about publishing a declaration of longing for the online universe to see, you should realize that the online universe quite probably also includes your love interest.
4. Don't make public lists of people you like.
Not only does it create loads of tension between the list-maker, people "on the list" and people "off the list"...it's also totally fucking unnecessary. Send your people notes or something.
5. Don't make un-called for, insulting comments about people on their own blogs.
Again--totally fucking unnecessary. See rules #1 and #2, and also realize that if you're reading the person's blog in the first place, you shouldn't be insulting them. Unless they've insulted you. Which they shouldn't have (see rules #1 and #2.)
Now I realize that many people, including myself, have broken these guidelines at one time or another. But I'm making a resolution to stick to them whenever possible. Anyone with me?
