Although I'm more than ready to go back to school, there are some things I'll miss about living here:
--My home friends, who have been wonderful and a lot of fun.
--My nice big bed, which I'm leaving for a freaking "extra long" mattress ("Extra long?!" Can't they make it "extra short" and widen it proportionally? Or at least make it a size where you can find more than, like, three sets of sheets in the universe that fit and aren't butt-ugly.)
--My surroundings, nature-wise. One of the things I like and often take for granted about this area is that things are green because nature intended them to be that way, not because they are being maintained with thousands of gallons of imported water. If a New Englander stopped tending to his or her lawn, it would become overgrown and filled with disease-carrying insects. If Pomona neglected its lawns, they'd turn brown and die. And unlike most of Southern California, Amherst isn't paved to within an inch of its life.
--Driving. Sure, I spent an inordinate amount of money on gas this summer, but it was worth it to be able to get to places beyond my immediate surroundings. And what could beat driving home alone late at night, listening to introspective crap that is intolerable during the day but somehow O.K. after midnight?
--Having nothing to do. Which, yeah, got kinda old after a while, but once I get back and start classes, lessons, practices, papers and who knows what else, having hours to read Michael Connelly novels or watch Sex and the City will start to look good.
