A lot went on these past seven-ish days. Not much of it good. But bitching online about things won't do anything, and maybe things will be better now that it's the start of yet another week. And on the bright side of things, I finally saw Mean Girls.
My Music Perception and Cognition class makes me happy. I think that's because it's so much harder to understand than I thought it would be. For every "Whoooaaa...so that's why that happens..." revelation, there are five "What the fuck is this supposed to mean?!" moments. It probably shouldn't make me this happy--I mean, the class is down to a third of what it was at the beginning of the semester--but it's awesome to dissect every little thing about music, and the act of hearing music, which is something I've taken for granted all my life.
Speaking of music...Why do we appreciate the music of the late '90s so much? There was a "Middle School Dance Party" a while back, and while I didn't go, a friend was raving about how great the music was. These were, after all, the days before they started playing only rap at dances. The Backstreet Boys, the Spice Girls...were times ever really that simple? Were we just prepubescent idealists in a pre-9/11, pre-George Bush, pre-economic-recession bubble of naivete and hormones? Maybe. And now we've been forced to grow up, jaded, grinding perserveringly to the grim, near-desparate beat of "Get Low" and looking for someone to take back to our dorm rooms and hook up with in a haze of drugs and liquor. A little sad.
Although come to think of it, middle school pretty much sucked.
