a disillusioning footnote

I was doing some studying in the Village, and this random band was covering that song that goes, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with." And for the first time, I realized that that song advocated either a) settling for someone you don't really care about or b) masturbation.
The fact that someone would write a classic rock song, complete with references to eagles and doves, about either subject kind of disturbs me.
